About Us
A Different Chick Farm is sitting on a stunning 6 acres, in Johnson City, TN. When we moved to our farm in 2011 we had no idea we would become what we are today. We started our farm as a homestead for a better life for our family but it quickly grew into providing a better food source for our community. Although farming was skipped for a few generations, our farming roots run deep in Appalachia. From the 1700's my ancestors grew food on this land, from Washington County and Carter County over to Avery county. When we moved onto our farm in 2011 our daily activities were run by all our family, we had Me (Tiffany), my husband Steve, 3 daughters (Summer, Alyssa, and Morgan) and our very special son Daniel. Today our girls have moved onto different jobs but still hold a love for growing in their hearts. Today our farm is run by me, my husband and Daniel. We grow just about anything you can around here and some stuff that people say you can't! We love to be different and grow things that are diversified. We grew somewhat conventional when we began our farm but always stayed away from chemicals and were careful on our practices because of sensitivities to non-organic food. In 2018 we became Certified Naturally Grown and began our first farmers market in Johnson City. In early 2020 we received a grant that paid for our organic certification and transition through Miller and CCOF. We expected a 3 year transition but after observing our growing practices and our farm we were certified without transition in December of 2020. In 2023 we went an extra step. After being a fan of Eliot Coleman for years and following his practices, we began to follow Real Organic Project. Our farm inspection was early summer 2023 and we were certified right after! We have been certified since and not only grow organic but we have a heart for organic growing. Our farm is not just our job, it's our lifestyle and our passion.
Practices
We have been Certified Organic though CCOF since 2020. We grow regeneratively and sustainably. Our chickens are rotated around our farm during non-growing times to eat bugs, weed seeds, and fertilize the area naturally. Although our chickens are not certified organic, we feed them New Country Organics soy free and wheat free organic layer feed, and pasture raise them on our organic pastures. We are proud to say none of our crops in 2025 were even sprayed with Organic approved products! Our Real Organic Project add on means that on top of our organic practices we do our best to grow sustainably and regeneratively. It also means that everything we grow is grown in the ground, and no hydroponics ever. We feel passionate about healthy soil, and crops grown in this natural and healthy soil.
