Deep Gap Regenerative Farms is a non-profit farm located in Watauga County in Wildcat Creek Valley. We raise, on pasture, Cornish Cross chickens and Sem-Angus cattle for meat and Rhode Island Reds for eggs.

Our family of 7 manage and run our farm business and in the near future will begin training refugees to create their own regenerative farming business using our farm as a training ground to launch their own independent business contributing to our local economy, environment and local food network and restoring them holistically in mind, body and spirit.

Our name contains our mission. At 50 years old, we felt God calling us to create a farm refuge using permaculture principles to be able to not only provide for the needs of our family but the community and refugees both domestic and foreign. For both our family and those who will come to us for regeneration, there lies a ‘deep gap’ between our current inadequate state and the task that lies ahead.

For us, there is a challenge of creating a thriving regenerative, training farm, providing a home and restoration for our refugees in their personal lives. For the refugees, there also is a deep gap to cross from brokenness to the wholeness and dignity Christ desires to give them. We believe that only Christ can carry us across our respective ‘deep gaps” to the other side and fulfill our mission.

This is a movement in the making. People restored, restoring other people who in turn restore more people and on it goes. All the while creating an army of regenerative farmers, regenerating the earth, regenerating the health of the community and regenerating the resiliency of our food supply. This is Deep Gap Regenerative Farms.

Practices

We use regenerative, permaculture principles to raise nutrient rich, non-gmo, pesticide/herbicide-free pasture raised chicken, beef and eggs. Our Angus cattle and chickens are moved daily to fresh pasture and given fresh mountain water to drink. Our cattle are grass finished with a small daily ration of non-gmo grain mixed with minerals and organic Icelandic kelp. We utilize sustainable practices in the field to keep our cattle happy and growing strong like shade mobiles, beneficial nematodes and diatomaceous earth.

For our chickens, they have shade and protection from predators and weather using our mobile chicken shelters, called chicken tractors. We aim for zero waste in our farm, creating compost from the waste we create which in turn nourishes our farm rather than filling landfills.
